15 Marvelous Mud Rooms (It’s that time of year)

Farm House Mud Room I love mud rooms! In the Northeast, yards, roads, farms, and job sites are a muddy mess this time of year.  That means there is a good possibility that dogs, cats, kids, and adults will be tracking mud into the house.  The best defenses for terrible mud and slush are great mud rooms. In the design of these mud rooms, we try to make them bright, comfortable, and, above all, functional.  In one home, [...]

17 Mudrooms

Mudroom with Cubbies Over the years, we have designed many mudrooms.  Sometimes they are designed as a room dedicated to getting mud off of kids, pets, and everyone coming into the side door of the home.  Other times, they serve light duty as entries with coat hooks and a place to sit and take off or put on shoes. In the design of these mudrooms, we try to make them bright, comfortable, and above all, functional.  In one [...]

5 Homes in the Snow(Including My Old Farm House)

Stone Addition Something magical happens to a home with the first snowfall of the season.  Around my house the kids and the animals are even more excited than I am as we run and throw snow balls.  Rosie, our mini Aussie, tracks in the snow which melts on the floor while I start a fire and my wife makes hot cocoa. The timing doesn’t always work, but when we can coordinate a photo shoot of one of [...]

5 Small Projects That Make a Big Difference

As in life, sometimes it is the little changes that make the greatest impact on how we live, and that is especially true with home renovation projects.  A comfortable place to take off your boots and hang up your coat in the northeast is more than a convenience-it is a daily necessity.  A well-organized laundry room with a sink, storage, and a place to work is just the basic outline of a room which is critical to every home.  If [...]

Laundry Rooms

It is often true that the simple things in life are the ones that make us the most happy. In our homes the unsung and hardly glamorous laundry room serves to keep the engine of our lives running smoothly. Though clean socks may not guarantee happiness, it is a start. While it is true that a stacked washer-dryer works fine in a closet and clothes can soak in the kitchen sink, a dedicated space centralizes the chores. There are, in [...]

A Room for Mud

Living through the seasons in the Northeast reminds me of my daughters’ favorite book ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ where the father, the kids and the dog go looking for a bear and when they find one, they run home through the snow storm (Hoooo woooo), the forest (Stumble trip), the mud (Squelch squerch), the water (Splash splosh) and back through the grass (Swishy swashy). They then run into the house(without wiping their feet), up the stairs, into bed and [...]
