The first of my articles on house sizes(Small Home-Big Dreams) featured a home with 2200 square feet of heated living space. We explored the strategies which are critical when designing a smaller place to live.
A medium sized home in our office runs between about 3000 square feet and 5000 square feet of heated space. As the size of the home increases, shared spaces are still desirable but are not as critical to the overall perceived spaciousness of the home.
We are able to include more bedrooms as the size increases and/or more single purpose rooms such as a home office, dining room, or sun room. Alternatively, the same rooms found in smaller homes can become larger, either in square footage or volume.
Since we are porch lovers, we feel almost any home can benefit from one or more screen or open porches.
Hmmmm, my living room of similar layout, including doors to the porch could use a few of your designs. You have me thinking of screening in the back porch. The changes from your “small homes” could easily be realized in my own home. Fireplace redesign would be #1. I always find the colors you use to be pleasing. I may steal the living room color! Jim, Thanks for the ideas,
Any time Herb.
Looks great, Jimmy!
Thanks
Great informational article and a lovely home. I am curious where this home falls in the 3,000 to 5,000 square foot range of your medium sized homes. What is the approx. size of this home? Thanks.
Please ignore my previous question. You have already answered it on your
Modern Farmhouse post. I apologize, I didn’t realize my wife had already asked the question yesterday! We were both admiring this home. Thanks.
About 3800 square feet.
