4 Greek Revival Buildings

We love Greek Revival style buildings.  We add on to Greek Revival homes and we design them from the ground up.  We often take liberties  with details and proportions like carpenter architects did with the originals.  Above is a home we designed for Kermit Love, the creator of Big Bird and his partner.  Kermit was in his 80s when we began his project.  He asked us to make the first floor handicapped accessible, and we did.  Only Kermit would […]

How Much? (2016)

We are frequently asked the cost of building a project. Universally the answer is: It depends what you build. Following is a list of some of the elements that go into homes in our region and their installed costs. The prices will vary depending on the supplier, contractor and the market conditions at the time of the bid. These prices were provided by suppliers and contractors in early 2016 (Technically late 2015) .

6 Renovations That Can Change the Way You Live in Your Home (Updated)

I have renovated and added to my own home for many reasons, including the fact I hated the existing kitchen.  I added a porch and a bedroom because I love porches and my oldest daughter needed a room of her own.  Many people renovate a home because no one thought to incorporate light or views in the original design.  Sometimes the existing home is outdated, dark, too small, poorly laid out, or all of the above.
In any case, some […]

Country Lane Home-Featured Project

It is not uncommon for our clients  to ask us to add additional rooms or outbuildings to their property, but it is unusual to work on a home more than a decade in the past then have the current owners ask us to expand the home even further.  That is exactly what happened with the ‘Country Lane Home’.  An earlier kitchen and family room renovation was expanded when we added living space and guest quarters and porches to this […]

Sun Room (Revisited)

The best time to enjoy a sunroom can be the middle of winter.  While we always think of sitting in a sun room looking out over a lush garden, the time when we need sun the most is when those plants are well below the snow.  Like sitting on a porch in the summer while a warm rain falls out in the yard, sitting in a sun room around a crackling fire while it storms outside can be a […]

Dinner and Entertaining on 13 Porches

I’ve been dreaming of spring lately, and nothing heralds the arrival of spring like dinner on the porch.   At our home, as soon as it is warm enough, the porch becomes the center of outdoor entertaining.  We often install radiant heaters for our clients, which allow an early start and an extended season.  Our clients use their porches for relaxing, dining, and entertaining.  The good news is that there are so many ways to design a porch and so many ways to […]

Historic Expansion (Featured Project)

The original house had been added to over time, but at its core was a beautiful old home with wide pine floors and plaster walls. A critical requirement of the project was to preserve the integrity of the historic structure while giving the new owners additional space for their growing family and friends. With some careful design and care during construction, we were even able to save two venerable old trees which have graced the home for the better […]

6 Ways to Side Your Home

When we begin to design a home, we generally have an idea of what the exterior material will be.  Often we will try alternate materials either to change the aesthetics, to adjust the budget, or simply at the request of our clients. Many of our projects combine two or more materials.

If you are designing a modern home, the exterior material palate is almost limitless as long as it keeps the weather out and doesn’t fall apart.

A traditional home in […]

5 Additions That Especially Add Value to a Home(Revisited)

In a completely unscientific review of past and current projects, I find that five types of additions are requested more than all the others combined.  The reason may be that homeowners value these five additions the most or it could be that most homes lack or only have poor examples of these spaces. While I never try to predict real estate trends or future markets, it stands to reason that a home, which includes fine examples one or more […]

Stone Barn Addition-Featured Recent Project

We always love it when our former clients call us back for additional work on their homes. In this case the owners wanted an open room which would be a place to play pool, entertain, and gather with family and friends. They wanted the addition to feel like a stone barn to which the main house was added, and we all agree, it really does feel like the stone addition has always been there.
